ACUA Ocean

Designs and deploys autonomous uncrewed surface vessels for ocean monitoring and marine operations.

//Overview

ACUA Ocean designs and operates unmanned surface vessels, or USVs, for maritime operations, monitoring and data collection. Its platform, built to be robust, reliable and reconfigurable, provides the space, weight and power needed to carry modular sensor and system payloads and to keep working in higher sea states. At the core of the offering sits the Pioneer-class USV, a scalable, dual-use solution whose reduced build and operating costs let end users put more vessels, and more systems and sensor payloads, into the water for a given budget, increasing the volume of ocean data collected. A press release dated 12 August 2025 records that Lloyd's Register, a world leading class society and provider of independent certification, awarded compliance to ACUA Ocean's PIONEER, making it the first ROUV in the UK certified under Workboat Code 3. The applications span civil and defence work. For survey customers the company offers seabed and asset integrity surveys, covering both surface and subsurface data collection. Environmental monitoring gathers ocean data to inform marine management, spatial planning and the protection of marine protected areas. Infrastructure monitoring covers Critical National Infrastructure, or CNI, along with environmental impact assessments. On the defence and security side, ACUA Ocean points to maritime ISR and distributed maritime operations for border control and security, to submarine detection for anti-submarine warfare and subsurface ISR, and to maritime security in the form of deterrents and protection for critical maritime infrastructure. The vessels serve as a communications relay too, carrying surface and subsurface data and communication traffic. That mix of uses reflects how the company positions the technology: a single uncrewed platform, referred to elsewhere as a medium uncrewed surface vessel or MUSV, reconfigured with different payloads rather than replaced by a set of purpose-built hulls. The throughline runs from deploying sensors and systems off a stable surface platform instead of a crewed vessel to the cost per unit of data that follows. ACUA Ocean operates from Turnchapel Wharf, Barton Road, Turnchapel, Plymouth, and counts Project NORS among its activities. The business trades as ACUA Ocean Limited and serves end users who need a persistent presence at sea, whether that means building environmental baselines, watching over submerged and offshore assets, or supporting security and naval tasks with distributed sensing and relay capability.
