Marine pollution sources, monitoring and remediation technology.

Marine pollution is a set of separate problems that share a destination. Grouping them under one heading obscures the fact that the sources, the monitoring methods, and the plausible interventions are different in each case.

Plastic is the most visible. Most of it enters the sea from land, carried by rivers and by poorly contained waste near populated coastlines, with a smaller contribution from fishing gear and shipping. Once in the water, larger items fragment under ultraviolet light and mechanical action into microplastics, which disperse through the water column and settle into sediment, and which no cleanup method meaningfully recovers. That asymmetry matters for anyone deciding where to spend: interception near the source is tractable, while open-water collection addresses only floating macro debris.

Nutrient pollution works differently. Nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural runoff and wastewater drive algal blooms, and when a bloom dies the decomposition consumes dissolved oxygen and leaves a hypoxic zone that mobile species leave and bottom-dwelling species do not survive. Chemical contamination covers hydrocarbons from spills and chronic discharge, heavy metals, and persistent organic compounds that accumulate up food chains long after their use is restricted. Noise counts as pollution too, and it is a live regulatory issue for shipping, seismic survey, and pile driving, because many marine animals depend on sound to navigate, feed, and communicate. Munitions and industrial waste dumped decades ago sit on the seabed and corrode on their own schedule.

Monitoring is where subsea technology earns its place here. Water quality sondes on moorings and autonomous platforms track oxygen, turbidity, and chlorophyll continuously. Sediment coring establishes contaminant history. Sonar and vehicle survey locate dumped material, lost gear, and debris fields. Acoustic recorders characterise noise. Environmental DNA sampling detects species presence from a water sample without capturing anything. Remediation is far harder than measurement, and for most contaminants the realistic options are source control, containment, and monitored recovery rather than removal.
