MARIN

Independent marine research institute that tests ship and offshore designs, hydrodynamics, and marine technologies.

//Overview

MARIN is a maritime research institute working on clean, smart and safe shipping and the sustainable use of the sea. It serves the maritime sector, government and society as an independent knowledge partner, and its work covers the full chain from concept development and design through to operation. It combines hydrodynamic and nautical expertise with research into complete vessels and structures, and it draws on in-house tools and methods ranging from databases and simulations to model-scale experiments, simulators, virtual reality and full-scale monitoring. Its scope extends across several maritime markets. In life at sea, it supports the development of floating airports, ports, energy islands, and fish and seaweed farming through high-quality hydrodynamic research. In oil and gas, it helps improve concepts and make offshore extraction operations safer during the energy transition. In transport and shipping, it works to make shipping cleaner, smarter and safer by combining hydrodynamic, nautical, propulsion, logistic and operational knowledge. In defence, it supports complex platforms and missions at sea in realistic conditions and cooperates with partners such as the Royal Netherlands Navy. In renewables, it contributes to solutions for floating wind power, floating solar panels, and energy generation from tidal flows, waves and temperature differences. It addresses passengers and yachting by improving comfort, convenience, luxury, sustainability and safety on board, and infrastructure by contributing advisory reports for ports, tunnels, bridges and waterways. For marine systems, it improves sub-systems such as propulsion, steering and stabilisation, and for authorities and regulators it helps develop policy advice and assess practical guidelines. Behind those markets sits a strong research programme structure covering CFD development, time-domain simulations, measurement and control, operations and human factors, waves and hydrostructural loads, manoeuvring and nautical studies, stability and seakeeping, autonomy and decision support, and resistance and propulsion. MARIN therefore works as more than a test facility. It is a research organisation that turns scientific and experimental work into practical support for ship and offshore design, operations, regulation and innovation.
